Ending violence against children in Solomon Islands

We’re working to keep children in Solomon Islands safe and protected from violence. We’re helping to create strong, supportive school environments and communities to provide safe learning places for children. And we’re bringing about long-term policy change that helps keep girls and boys safe from all forms of violence.

Why children in Solomon Islands need better protection

In the Solomon Islands, children’s right to live free from harm, abuse and neglect is threatened by persistent social norms that accept high levels of violence within homes, schools and communities. In 2020, we conducted interviews with children in Solomon Islands in order to understand what made them feel sad or unsafe in their lives. The top answer they gave was violence or abuse in their school or community, like bullying from other children, fighting and arguing amongst community members, and being physically punished by teachers.

Save the Children’s Protektim Pikinini Moa programme

Teachers, cultural leaders, parents and caregivers and other people in communities have the greatest potential to protect children and provide for their physical and emotional safety.

Supported by the New Zealand Aid Programme and Save the Children supporters, the Protektim Pikinini Moa project aims to keep children safe and protected from violence in schools.

We’ll achieve this by ensuring schools have effective systems in place for child protection; school communities have the knowledge and skills to provide a non-violent teaching and learning environment; children understand their rights and have the skills needed to keep schools accountable. We’re also working alongside partners to develop and implement a child protection policy for the education sector that is aligned and connected to the Child and Family Welfare Act. With this, we will help keep children in Solomon Islands safe and protected from violence in schools now and into the future.

How we know we're making a difference

We believe that real impact for children will only be achieved through collaboration and partnerships. That’s why we work closely with the government in Solomon Islands as well as education providers, rights organisations, cultural leaders, schools, teachers and students in our projects. Violence against children is a breach of their rights to live free from abuse, harm, neglect and exploitation.
